Columbia University

Columbia University (Columbia; officially Columbia University in the City of New York) is a private Ivy League research university in New York City.

Founded in 1754 as King’s College, it was renamed Columbia College when it reopened in 1784 after the American Revolution. It became Columbia University in 1912. Columbia College was the undergraduate liberal arts school for men until 1983, when women began to be admitted.

Columbia is the oldest institution of higher education in New York and the fifth-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It is one of nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence, seven of which belong to the Ivy League.

Shaped by the dynamic culture of New York City, Columbia has been less affected by tradition than other private Eastern universities of comparable age and esteem. Ranked as one of America’s top Ivy League schools, Columbia University has a lengthy and proud history of graduates.

Located in Upper Manhattan in New York City, it has since birthed ‘96 Nobel Laureates, Supreme Court Justices, 38 living billionaires, 11 Olympic medalists, 39 Academy Award winners and 125 Pulitzer Prize recipients,’ including Barack Obama, Jack Kerouac, Theodore Roosevelt, JD Salinger and many others.

An admission is extremely competitive as the Columbia acceptance rate is only 7%. Popular majors include Economics, Computer Science, and Political Science and Government.
