University of California, Berkeley

The University of California was founded in 1868 following in the wake of the gold rush by leaders of the newly established 31st state. The school moved to its Berkeley campus in 1873. Appropriate for the state’s early economy, the first great faculties were in mining, engineering, and agriculture.

The University of California, Berkeley, is the premier public university in the United States, with 97 percent of its academic programs being among the top in the country.

Berkeley is the most selective school, in the University of California system and is one of the most selective universities in the country. The university has a 1232 acre campus in Berkeley near San Francisco. By 1895 enrollment at Berkeley has grown to more than 1,300 students – about seven times that when the campus opened in 1873 –accommodated in seven principal buildings.

Scientific research has been a hallmark of the University of California, Berkeley, since the end of the 19th century when M.E Jaffe aided in the understanding of the importance of vitamins, minerals, and proteins, as well as elucidating the negative role of cholesterol and fats. In the 1920s, Berkeley investigators identified vitamin E and the flu virus.
