Distance learning education

Technology based distance education is emerging as an increasingly visible feature of postsecondary education in the United States.

Distance learning dates back more than 100 years to Europe, Africa and Asia, where open universities offered ‘external’ degrees.

The well-known British Open University began in 1971 and now serves more than 209,000 undergraduate and graduate students worldwide.  In distance education, educators have the opportunity to define, design, and manage effective and robust teaching and learning systems, programs, and courses.

In distance education or distance learning, the students and instructors remain geographically apart. Today, the ability to take courses from a remote location utilizing the internet is referred to as ‘e-learning’.

The distance learning programs enrollment process and class size were largely flexible. Students are allowed to enroll in e-learning classes throughout the semester, and enrollment is fluid. The distance learning program and faculty members decide the maximum number of students allowed to enroll in each e-learning class.

Concepts of lifelong learning, individualized or personalized learning, and time-free, space-free, ‘just in time’ learning arrangements have emerged, all of which allow learning away from the traditional campus.
