Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious awards and was the first internationally based scholarship competition.

Over eighty Rhodes Scholars are selected worldwide each year. The scholars are awarded annually to 32 American students. Rhodes Scholar students spend two or three years studying at the University of Oxford in Britain.

Candidates for the scholarship must have demonstrated excellent scholarship, good character and at least some modest success in sports.

The scholarships were founded by Ceil Rhodes, the British colonialist and entrepreneur, who died in 1902. Cecil Rhodes established the Rhodes Trust so that high-achieving foreign students could be educated at Oxford.

In his will that created the scholarships. Cecil Rhodes expressed the hope that each of his scholars would ‘esteem the performance of public duties as his highest aim.’

This program has become the most famous academic scholarship in the world. The Rhodes Scholarship covers tuition and fees for two years of study at Oxford University. An optional third year is possible. Students are also provided travel to and from England and maintenance scholarship to cover living expenses.
