University of Bonn

It is also known as Bonn University, is located in Bonn, Germany. The University of Bonn, styled the High School, or Hochschule, was originally founded by the Elector Maximillian Frederick of Cologne in 1777.

After being temporarily suppressed during the French occupation, in 1818 Frederick William III of Prussia founded a new institution at Bonn to provide a university for the Rhineland area of Germany.
The charter of foundation was signed at Aix la Chapelle by Frederick William III on the 18th October 1818. It is formed on the model of that of Berlin.

Frederick William wanted to open a nonsectarian university with schools of both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology. The creation of a University at Bonn marks the beginning of the modern period of German university development.
